Management Controls
A formal, written quality control program should be established that covers, but not limited to, employee work practices, chemical application procedures, installation processes that comply with manufacturing instructions, plant/tree installation and care, and equipment control. Employees should be trained on what the program is and how it should be applied. The program should be designed to follow the flow of work. You should start with a thorough review of all plans and specifications to ensure all potential exposures are addressed to your satisfaction. Be careful when hiring seasonal workers or contractors for sporadic work such as snow removal. Make sure your company insurance and quality requirements are understood.

PRE-OPERATION CHECKS

ARE YOU READY TO MOW?
Be sure to wear protective clothing. Long pants and eye protection can lower your risk of injury from thrown objects. Wear footwear that protects your feet and won’t let you slip if you mow on slopes or uneven ground.

CHECK YOU LAWN
For your safety and for the safety of others, always inspect the area before mowing.

OBJECTS
Anything which can be picked up by the blades and thrown is a potential hazard to you and others. Look for things like stones, sticks, bones and wire. Remove them from the mowing area.

PEOPLE & PETS
People and animals near the mowing area can move into your path or into a position where they could be struck by thrown objects. Clear the area of people and pets, especially children. Their safety is your responsibility.

SAFETY Tips: be careful out there
According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 60,000 injuries are treated by hospital emergency rooms each year because of unsafe operation of power lawn mowers. Kids under the age of 15 are the most common victims. Regardless of which mower you choose, don’t forget to practice safety. We’ve assembled some guidelines below to help keep you safe while using your equipment:

  • Always wear protective eyewear.
  • Mow only in daylight, when the grass is dry.
  • Check your yard for any debris or objects, such as toys that could pose a hazard if you mowed over them.
  • Keep you children and pets out of the mowing area.
  • Never let the starter rope snap back when starting a mower.
  • Look three to four feet directly ahead of you while mowing.
  • Never tilt a mower; always keep all four wheels on ground.
