Mind Mapping

Visual Memory
Another seemingly unrelated study on memory was also used in the formation of Mind Maps. In this study by Ralph Haber, 2560 photos were shown to subjects. Then subjects were shown 2560 pairs of photos and asked in each case to say which photo had been in the original group of 2560 and which had not.

The success rate at this test averaged between 85% and 95%, showing that humans have an almost photographic visual memory. In another study where 10,000 vivid pictures were used, a success rate of 99% was
recorded.

Originality
What happens if two people draw mini Mind Maps around the idea ‘shoe’. (A mini Mind Map is a Mind Map that only goes one level deep, i.e. it only has words that are directly related to the central idea). If each person comes up with seven related words, how many do you think would be duplicates between the two people? Studies have shown that the average is one word in common, and anything above two is very unusual.

Mind-Mapping for Web Instruction and Learning

Introduction
In a recent overview of instructional design for the new digital media, M. David Merrill declares that:

Many of the current tools for developing technology-based training materials require considerable time to learn and even more time to use. Too often in the search for efficiency, there is a corresponding loss of instructional quality. A […] goal of instructional science is the search for tools that are significantly more efficient to use while at the same time promoting an improved quality in the product. [1]

Assuming this situation, this paper has the purpose of defining a more efficient method for transforming instructional events and strategies into Web-based learning objects. Educators, in any level of curriculum and discipline, can easily use it. This statement of purpose demands further clarification of the terms used. What kind of method is this? Why is to be used by educators? What is an instructional event? What is an instructional strategy? What is a learning object? How can one describe Web-based learning objects? The remainder of the introduction will be dedicated to provide a brief explanation of these terms to set the basis for further discussion.

Mind Mapping Introduction

Creative Thinking and MindMaps
A Mind Map Enables One:

  • To clear the mind of paradigms, thus providing space for new creative thought
  • To capture and develop “flashes” of insight when they occur
  • To explore all the creative possibilities of a given subject
  • To encourage more consistent creative thinking
  • To create new conceptual frameworks within which previous ideas can be reorganized
  • To plan creatively

Why Mind Map?

  • Disadvantages of traditional linear notes:
  • Energy and time wasted writing down superfluous words
  • Other information may be missed while noting down one idea
  • Take longer to read and review
  • Associations and connections between key words and ideas not readily apparent
    –Attention wanders easily
–Lack of color and other visual qualities handicap memory

Mind Map – Basics

  • Mind maps work the way the brain works
    –Not in nice neat lines

A Celebration of Love: St. Valentine’s Day

One day solely dedicated to the light of love – Dayenu! It is enough. Named after an ambiguous assortment of early Christian ‘Valentinian’ martyrs, the annual celebration of compassion lifts up self-sacrificing, all-encompassing love and the power of sacred trust between people. Over time, the Valentine’s Day feast has evolved into an occasion for exchanging cards, flowers and chocolate as tokens of appreciation. Driven by the firm conviction that every person deserves recognition of their inherent worth and dignity, Unitarian Universalists are called to reach out, affirm and embrace the Other in radical compassion, while simultaneously working to ameliorate situations where people are being denied their humanity.

Following are a few suggestions for bringing Sixth Principle Ministry to life in relation to congregational ministries related to St. Valentine’s Day in Seven Areas:

  1. Spiritually,
  2. Through Education,
  3. Through Advocacy,
  4. Through Partnership,
  5. Through Stewardship,
  6. Through Pilgrimage and Witness, and

Thoughtless Male Survival Guide

Men. Have you ever forgotten your girl’s birthday or called her by the name of your ex? Has she ever caught you oogling her best friend’s posterior or glancing at the TV for sports scores during an intimate moment? Did she ever find one of her old love letters in your trash can or catch you web surfing on www.naughtynurses.com?

If so, then you are what millions of American women, and we in the gifting-giving business, call a “Thoughtless Male.”

The “Thoughtless Male” doesn’t intend to hurt; he just seems to do it—repeatedly—through his innate forgetfulness and inbred clumsiness! And once he’s done something to offend the one he loves most, he finds it nearly impossible to manifest the right words and actions to get him back in her warm loving arms.

01. Scenario: In the midst of an intimate moment, you’re caught trying to watch SportsCenter out of the corner of your eye.
