Visitors Guide to Haiti

Overview of Haitian Ministries Programs in Haiti

As the Haitian proverb tells us “Men anpil, chay pa lou”, meaning many hands lighten the load, we are working hand-in-hand to empower and support the struggle of the Haitian people as they work to address the social and economic problems in their communities. In our mission of “Helping Haitians help Haitians” we currently support Haitian organizations working to assist those most in need. We are supporting orphanages, a neighborhood meal program, and a medical clinic. We also help individuals to improve their ability to support themselves through a scholarship program and a small business loan program.

While in Haiti, you will get the chance to visit many of the projects we have been involved with over the years and to meet our Haitian partners. Detailed project and program information is available through the Office of Haitian Ministries. The following is a very brief overview of some of the projects:

Your Guide to Safe and Healthy Travel

What to Pack in Your Travelers Health Kit

Most people returning to their home country to visit should pack a personal first-aid kit. What you include depends on how long you’re going and whether you’ll have access to medical care and supplies. Here’s a general list of items to include:

  • Insect repellent containing DEET
  • Insecticide-treated bed nets for each traveler (if you’re staying in a malaria-risk area with no screens or windows)
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Blanket
  • Flashlight
  • Hot/cold pack
  • Antibacterial waterless hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol) like Purell®
  • Basic first aid items (e.g., band-aids, cotton, gauze pads, bandages, antiseptic ointment, thermometer, hypoallergenic tape, tweezers, scissors, latex gloves, eye patch)
  • Moleskin for blisters

Food and Water Safety

It’s important to watch what you eat and drink in other countries. Even though it may be difficult to do when visiting family or friends, it can help prevent travelers’ diarrhea and more serious conditions such as hepatitis A and typhoid fever.

A Guide for Travelers to Malaria-Risk Areas

Many travelers acquire malaria, a potentially life-threaten-ing disease, during travel to tropical and subtropical countries. If you are traveling to Mexico and Central America, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, South America, sub-Saharan Africa, the Indian subcontinent, Eastern Europe, Asia, the Middle East, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, or the Solomon Islands, you could be at risk for malaria.

Malaria is always a serious disease and may be a deadly illness. Humans get malaria from the bite of a mosquito infected with the parasite. You can usually prevent malaria by taking an antimalarial drug and by avoiding mosquito bites.

Pregnancy and travel

  • Getting malaria while you are pregnant can harm you and your fetus. It is best if you do not travel to malaria-risk areas during your pregnancy. If you have to travel, take either mefloquine or chloroquine (see below) to help reduce your chance of getting malaria. Preventing mosquito bites also helps reduce the risk that you will get sick. Taking medicine to prevent malaria while you are pregnant is safer for you and your fetus than getting sick with malaria.

Visa Regulations

Visa regulations are very complex and vary widely from country to country. Some countries in the region allow visas on arrival, while others do not. Particularly when planning regional travel, you must check the visa regulations for each country you plan to visit. Things to consider include the need for multiple versus single entry, visa validity, and visa type. Be aware that regulations may change without warning, and implementation at ports of entry may be inconsistent. As of December 2009, the Government of India instituted changes in its visa regulations, which now require a gap of two months between visits for those entering the country on a Tourist (T) visa. This requirement may cause difficulty for those planning regional travel. Indian Embassies and Consulates abroad may grant exceptions, but these exceptions are not guaranteed.
