Hotmail Configuration Guide
Turn off automatic deletion of messages
By default, Hotmail will delete messages it thinks might be unsolicited email (spam). Whenever your professors send out messages to the entire class, Hotmail thinks this is junk and deletes it. This should be turned off. Start by clicking on the options link to the right of the tabs.
The default setting is labeled “bvious junk mail caught”. This setting will actually delete messages sent by your professors immediately. You want to choose “Enhanced.” This setting gives you the option below to not delete mail immediately, but rather to deliver messages temporarily to the junk mail folder. With these settings, you’ll still need to check your junk mail folder for emails from your professors.
Add UNL mail servers to your safe list
Above we changed settings so your messages won’t be deleted immediately; however, they’ll still end up in your junk mail folder. Hotmail has a way for you to specify a list of servers from which messages will go to your inbox instead of the junk mail folder. This is called your safe list. By adding the names of UNL mail servers to your safe list, your messages are more likely to end up in your inbox.
We now need to add server names to our list, one at a time. Most emails from professors come from either unlnotes.unl.edu or unlserve.unl.edu. Graduate teaching assistants may be using either of these or perhaps even bigred.unl.edu. All mail sent through the MyUNL (Blackboard) system is handled by a mail server with the name blackboard.unl.edu. Some departments such as computer science and engineering (cse.unl.edu) maintain their own servers.
Be sure to continue to check your junk mail folder. If an instructor is using a Hotmail account or other personal account to send out emails, these will continue to appear in the junk mail folder unless you add these servers to your safe list.
