HowTo – Use Packet Sniffers

Packet Capture
In this article, we shall cover the basic working of a sniffer, to capture packets for analyzing the traffic. If an analyst does not have working skills of a packet sniffer to a certain level, it is really hard to defend intrusions. This article would help the analyst to prepare to the level of what is required for basic packet collection and basic analysis, but not everything about sniffers. An in depth article on sniffer’s using packet crafting and packet capture will be coming soon. In this document we are using Wireshark Version 0.99.5 (SVN Rev 20677).

A Gardener’s Guide to Soil Testing

Fertilizing plants without knowing the soil pH and fertility level is like driving a car in a dense fog.you are never sure where you are. Without knowing the existing fertility level, you are likely to apply too much or too little lime and fertilizer for optimum plant growth.

Why test the soil?

Soil testing is a valuable tool in managing the mineral nutrition of the soil. It is a quick and accurate method to determine the relative acidity of the soil (pH) and the level of several essential nutrients (phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, sulfur, manganese, copper, and zinc) that may or may not be available for plant growth. The test results will aid you in making decisions regarding plant selection, soil preparation, and fertilization. They will help you avoid overfertilization, which can stimulate excessive plant growth and increase the likelihood of some diseases. It can also help reduce pollution of our water supplies. Excess nutrients applied, but not used by plants, may run off into surface waters during storms or leach into groundwater. By applying the correct grade and amount of fertilizer, you will avoid unnecessary pruning of excessive new growth and have healthier, more productive plants.

Understanding Google AdSense

The AdSense Factor

Google describes AdSense as “a fast and easy way for web site publishers of all sizes to display relevant Google ads on their web site’s content pages and earn money.” The AdSense ads displayed by Google on your site are matched to Google’s interpretation of the content theme of your site. In this manner, the AdSense ads will be of interest to your site visitors looking for the unique content your site offers to them.

AdSense is a system where Google places its AdWords ads on the content pages of non-Google web sites. It is a pay-per-click (PPC) service where webmasters are paid a portion of the revenue collected by Google from the advertisers. The advertiser pays Google a pre-determined amount each time a web site visitor clicks on an AdSense advertisement.

Where are the Semantics in the Semantic Web?

Introduction
The current evolution of the Web can be characterized from various perspectives [Jasper & Uschold 2001]:

Locating Resources: The way people find things on the Web is evolving from simple free text and keyword search to more sophisticated semantic techniques both for search and navigation.

Users: Web resources are evolving from being primarily intended for human consumption to being intended for use both by humans and machines .

Web Tasks and Services: The Web is evolving from being primarily a place to find things to being a place to do things as well [Smith 2001].

All of these new capabilities for the Web depend in a fundamental way on the idea of semantics. This gives rise to a fourth perspective along which the Web evolution may be viewed:

  • Semantics—The Web is evolving from containing information resources that have little or no explicit semantics to having a rich semantic infrastructure.
