Wine Developer’s Guide

Introduction
Processes and threads: in underlying OS and in Windows
Before going into the depths of debugging in Wine, here’s a small overview of process and thread handling in Wine. It has to be clear that there are two different beasts: processes/threads from the Unix point of view and processes/threads from a Windows point of view.

Each Windows’ thread is implemented as a Unix thread, meaning that all threads of a same Windows’ process share the same (unix) address space.

In the following:

  • W-process means a process in Windows’ terminology
  • U-process means a process in Unix’ terminology
  • W-thread means a thread in Windows’ terminology

A W-process is made of one or several W-threads. Each W-thread is mapped to one and only one U-process. All U-processes of a same W-process share the same address space.

The Guide to Psychophysics Programming with JAVA

What Java offers to the Psychophysicist

Full Screen Exclusive Mode and new Java2D API
Full Screen Exclusive Mode (FSEM) is introduced to core Java platform with version 1.4. Sun probably had the gaming industry in mind when they introduced it, nevertheless this offered a marvelous opportunity for psychophysicists. This mode and the new Java2D API, allow capturing the entire screen, provides tools for double buffering and proper vertical synchronization, all of which are essential for psychophysics programming. Depending on the OS/architecture, Java may use different strategies in FSEM. For instance on MS Windows it will most probably use the DirectX routines, on Mac OS X it uses native OpenGL libraries, on Linux/Unix it uses X11 libraries but can be instructed to use OpenGL libraries instead.

Architecture specific details are hidden while low level access is still possible

Valentine Gifts That Have Heart

Chocolate

You likely have seen fair-trade coffee in bags with pretty designs and an interesting story about the place where it was grown.

Now get ready for fair-trade chocolate.

“In the next year, we’re going to see an increase in the demand for fair-trade chocolate,” predicted Nicole Chettero of Trans Fair USA, which certifies fair-trade products. “Fair-trade chocolate grew almost 85 percent in 2005 alone.” And its reputation is approaching the “high-quality, gourmet” buzz of fair-trade coffee, she said.

Fair-trade chocolate means “not only did it come from a small, democratically elected collective of cacao producers, but they were paid above-market prices, and no child labor was used,” Chettero said. While fair trade does not equal organic, she said it does connote “sustainable farming, strict environmental standards and none of the worst pesticides.”
