FUN VALENTINE GAMES

Throwing the Smile
In this game, players are forbidden to smile, but trust us–giggling and laughing will abound.
HOW TO PLAY:

  1. Players sit in a circle, making sure they can see everyone else. One player who is It starts the game by smiling widely, while all the other players are somber. It then uses his hand to wipe the smile off his face and throw it to another player who has to catch the smile with his hand and put it on.
  2. This new It can then wipe off the smile to throw to someone else–though he will probably choose to mug wildly at everyone for a few minutes before relinquishing his happy role. Meanwhile, all other players must sit stone-faced. One smirk and they’re out.

TIPS: The youngest players are the least successful at winning this game (they simply can’t stop themselves from laughing), but they also tend to enjoy it the most.

Landscaping Ideas For the Environment

Tips for Selecting Trees

  • Plant local trees for regional character. What seems common here is unusual elsewhere and reflects our unique natural history and ecosystems.
  • Plant native tree species instead of ornamental varieties. Birds and wildlife prefer native trees and can benefit more from their flowers and seeds.
  • Trees that evolved in this region are better suited to our climate of wet winters and dry summers and to our soils that are often rocky, acidic, and low in nutrients.
  • Consider the final size of the tree to make sure there is clearance above and around the tree as it grows. Often trees are smaller in cultivation but many of our native trees can still get quite tall.
  • Consider the water and sun preferences. Some trees can grow in either sun or shade but require more water when grown in full sun. Plant drought-tolerant trees where they won’t get watered by sprinklers.

Basic Guide to Generic Lens Connections

My Pelco equipment has three wires for lens con- nections but the brand X lens my dealer sold me has four! What do I do?

We’ve all heard this problem many times, but it’s really simple to fix once you understand how lens wiring works. All lens motors are DC powered with two wires each, so reversing the polarity on those two motor wires will reverse the direction of the lens movement. If you connect one wire to positive and the other to negative the zoom (or focus) will move in one direction; reverse the wires and it will move the other direction. Typically the wires will be clearly identified as to which pair is zoom and which is focus, but zoom in versus zoom out or focus near versus focus far often gets lost in the translation.

The Java WSIT Tutorial

What is WSIT?
Sun is working closely with Microsoft to ensure interoperability of web services enterprise technologies such as message optimization, reliable messaging, and security. The initial release of WSIT is a product of this joint effort. WSIT is an implementation of a number of open web services specifications to support enterprise features. In addition to message optimization, reliable messaging, and security,WSIT includes a bootstrapping and configuration technology. Figure 1–1 shows the underlying services that were implemented for each technology.

Starting with the core XML support currently built into the Java platform, WSIT uses or extends existing features and adds new support for interoperable web services. See the following sections for an overview of each feature:

  • Bootstrapping and Configuration (page 3)
  • Message Optimization Technology (page 4)
  • Reliable Messaging Technology (page 5)
