Wireless Installation Guide Windows 7
Before you use the Wireless service you must ensure you have up to date Anti-virus software and that your operating system has been patched with the latest security updates. You are reminded that when using any Edinburgh Napier University IT service (which includes using your personal equipment) you are bound by the terms of Edinburgh Napier University’s Information Security Policy. A copy can be found on the “Information Security Policy” page in the C&IT Services section of the Staff Intranet.
INTRODUCTION
The following instructions are for configuring a Windows 7 laptop to connect to the wireless service using the built in Windows 7 wireless client. Some wireless adapter manufacturers provide their own wireless client e.g. Intel PROSet Wireless and Cisco ACU. The use of these clients is not supported by C&IT Services.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Ensure you have MicrosoftR Windows 7
- Check with your wireless network adapter¡¦s manufacturer that your adapter is WPA and Windows 7 compliant (if the card is compliant, download/install the latest drivers)
Please note: C&IT Services may not be able to fully support the installation of your wireless device.
WINDOWS 7 WIRELESS SETUP
- Step 1 Click on the wireless bar in the system Tray (bottom right hand corner of screen):
- Step 2 A window appears listing available wireless networks. Select Open Network and Sharing Center:
- Step 3 In the Open Network and Sharing Center window, select Set up a new connection or network:
- Step 4 In the Set up a Connection or Network window, select Manually connect to a wireless network:
- Step 5 Enter the following information and click Next:
- Step 6 A window will appear stating that NapAir has been successfully added. Click Change Connection Settings:
- Step 7 In the NapAir Wireless Network Properties window select the Security tab. Ensure Remember my credentials.. is selected if you wish Windows to remember your username/password. Modify PEAP settings and Advanced Settings ¡V see steps 8 and 9:
- Step 8 Modify PEAP settings: Ensure Validate Server Certificate is ticked. Tick Connect to these servers: and enter napier.ac.uk in the text box. Ensure Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP v2) is selected and click on Configure. Untick the When connecting: box. Click OK to close the windows until you return to NapAir Wireless Network Properties window (as seen in Step 7).
- Step 9 Modify Advanced settings: On the 802.1x settings, tick the Specify authentication mode: box and select User authentication. Click OK to save and close all open windows.
- Step 10 Connecting to the wireless network: if you don¡¦t automatically connect to the wireless network, open the window listing available wireless networks (see Steps 1 and 2). Select NapAir and click Connect. When prompted enter your User name (staff use login ID, students use matriculation number) and Password and click OK:
